Business Model Canvas as a design tool for market systems interventions: applications and impact

Over the last five years we have worked with clients across Asia and the Pacific to adapt the Business Model Canvas (BMC) tool for interventions on housing solutions, agricultural markets and for building competitiveness of small businesses.

We were quite impressed on how powerful the tool proved to be to solve questions such as - how do we explain financial viability of the intervention, what support should we provide to partners, how do we connect business growth to the development impact and where does impact fit in in the agenda of the private sector partner?

But most importantly, we dealt with questions such as:

• who the BMC is for
• who develops it
• who is the custodian
• and how to use it to design and manage interventions
