Time: 12:30-13:30 (BST, London time)

Inclusive financial market development faces new and growing challenges, especially in fragility-affected regions and in protracted crisis. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are 20 countries currently considered fragile in one way or another and over 19 million people that are either refugees or internally displaced. FSD Africa and Mercy Corps have teamed up to produce ‘Financing the Frontier: Inclusive Financial Sector Development in FASA’ to provide market facilitators with practical guidance in developing inclusive financial markets in these environments.

This report represents a shift in thinking about how development actors interact with financial systems in crisis settings, taking a market systems approach. This builds on renewed interest by FSD Africa, DFID and other donors in poverty reduction through long-term financing and capital market development, but also in crisis and fragility affected regions – where the development challenges are acute, but the need is greatest.

The panel will explore a series of questions around what is distinctive in financial market systems in crisis and fragile regions, what this means for market facilitators.

The panellists will discuss promising trends in this sector, among others, financial services for displaced populations and how to better harness remittances, and talk through recommendations for development actors working in this sector.

The panel and Q&A will be moderated by Mike Albu from BEAM Exchange.

Panellists:

  1. Tim Waites, Senior Livelihoods Adviser, DFID’s Conflict, Humanitarian and Security Department (CHASE) and Protracted Crisis Hub

  2. Joe Huxley, Director, Regional Strategies, Financial Sector Deepening Africa

  3. Thea Anderson, Technical Lead - Financial Services in Protracted Crisis, Mercy Corps
