Developing markets for sanitation - where to start?
Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) Webinar:
Developing markets for sanitation - where to start?
Date: 31st May 2017
Speakers: Aprajita Singh and Sanjay Singh (Population Services International, India), Jan Willem Rosenboom (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation)
Traditionally the WASH sector is not experienced in engaging with market sector players. The webinar looked at:
- how to critically analyse the market and identify and prioritise the capacity gaps
- how to intervene and in which role
These key questions were examined by drawing on case studies of best practice:
- the PSI-led Supporting Sustainable Sanitation Improvements project in Bihar
- various other Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded programmes
They highlighted what to look for in market landscaping - how this results in a unique approach to developing sanitation markets in each context - and when should an NGO take on an implementer role to perform one or more market functions.
The webinar also looked at how coordination of the market system is improved when national institutions with the legal mandate to improve access to sanitation is built as part of developing the market.
