Poor animal health is a key driver of low livestock productivity, food insecurity and poverty in the arid lowlands of Ethiopia. 

This learning brief looks at how the RIPA-North programme learnt from past failures and used a MSD approach to address the underlying problem of private sector veterinary services not reaching geographically dispersed pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities.  

It highlights how private sector models can be applied even in thin markets and fragile contexts to build the resilience of vulnerable communities.

It provides example success stories as well an example of a crisis response pivot using market-based approaches.
