Opportunities and drivers for SME agribusinesses to reduce food loss in Africa and Asia

Published by

This report examines key drivers of food loss in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia and presents five promising technologies/approaches for agricultural small and medium-sized enterprises (agri-SMEs) to mitigate these losses. These include solar dryers, hermetic storage, off-grid cold storage, agri-ecommerce platforms, and waste-to-value methods.

The report suggests strategies for governments, development partners, investors, and technology manufacturers to encourage agri-SMEs to adopt these solutions.

Recommendations include incentivising local financial institutions to support agri-SMEs, employing results-based finance in remote areas, and exploring voluntary carbon markets.

It also emphasises the need for research and development in emerging food loss technologies and innovative business models.
