Investing in people: creating a market systems dream team

There’s no secret to what’s behind most great programme implementation, great people. In market systems programmes this is especially true, with local knowledge, adaptability and a willingness to admit that sometimes things aren't working out, crucial. This requires managers to recognise the need to not only recruit staff that know and understand the local culture and context – over contracting imported technical consultants – but also to take the time and money to invest in and train them. This session, at the BEAM Conference 2016, looked at the implications of this for programme managers and donors, including longer start up times, more investment in staffing and a larger emphasis on staff capacity in programme reviews.
