I have come across projects adapting Business Model Canvas (BMC) to answer these questions but I have seen struggles to connect the dots. One of the fundamental gaps is on aligning the value proposition to the systemic challenge being addressed. Furthermore, when I asked who the BMC is for, who designs and who is the custodian of it, I saw confusion in the room of experts I dealt with. Confusions arose as to where the project comes in the BMC for the partner or does it come at all as it is supposed to be a facilitator.
Over the last five years, Innovision has worked with key clients- which includes Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter, to adapt the BMC to design and facilitate market systems solutions. Our tool kit is now listed under the MSD tool kit list of the Beam Exchange. I would be delighted to discuss with interested professionals and organizations on how we adapted the tool and what impact we observed in projects that adapted the tool during the intervention design process! HI Rubaiyath

Having used the BMC in various ways over the last few years, I would be interested in how it can be adapted for design. At VSO we have adapted it for use in youth enterprises programmes (competitive small awards based on BMC plan), to understand the range of business models in a system, and for developing plans for social enterprises. But I never considered it ‘open’ enough or able to capture the complexities of a market system for use in design because it demands a high degree of causality between the different elements of the BMC to be an effective plan. I guess it all hinges on how we frame the ‘value proposition’.

Count me in for further thinking.
