The journey of changing water services delivery in Kenya

Case study of Kenya Markets Trust's (KMT) work at improving Kenya's water services delivery sub-sector.

Only 26 per cent of the population is served by regulated providers. Current government investment is well below what's needed to extend access to all. KMT is seeking to provide water to rural and urban consumers by professionally managed water service providers operating within a regulatory and governance framework.

KMT is using a market systems approach to the water services delivery sub-sector, focusing on context-driven solutions that can directly improve, or be complementary to, the existing system.

Having assessed capacity of both public and private actors, KMT concluded space for interventions taking a market systems approach existed and could be successful.
