Pathways to systemic change in Kenya's livestock sector

Published by
Kenya Markets Trust (KMT)

KMT has been active in the livestock sector since 2013. This report outline the pathways to systemic change taken by KMT during that time. It focuses on what interventions were run, the impact they had on the market and the lessons learnt in the process.

It looks at four pathways:

  1. Improving primary production for pastoralists
  2. Strengthening the route to market for pastoralists
  3. Building the capacity of end-market processors and retailers
  4. Strengthening consumer awareness and demand for higher quality meat

It describes how the sector has evolved and how the livestock sector has grown as a result of  KMT's work to create behaviour change with market actors. Support for national programmes have had a mixed impact, however. But KMT has been able to influence multiple policies which will impact development throughout the chain.
